Jacob and Elijah are two beaming, beautiful, and well-loved boys. Aged 5 and 8, both were born with the same, rare disability called ATRX. (Only 168 individuals have been diagnosed with this disability.) Their fine motor skills, speech, and memory retention are affected.
Amy, the boys’ loving and resilient mother, first moved to Hawai‘i over 12 years ago with her parents. After meeting Ethan who would become her husband, together they started their family while living in 10 places in 10 years because of Ethan’s service in the Army. Hence, the Carrasco family has had the rare experience of meeting dozens of doctors throughout the country and abroad! Amy has been so pleased to receive care from Dr. Namea Sells in KMC’s Primary care clinic. Amy says Dr. Namea Sells “goes above and beyond any doctor I have seen.” She describes Dr. Sells as “exceptional,” “amazing,” and “wonderful.”
“Not only is Dr. Sells knowledgeable, she took the time to explain things in a way that was clear and understandable. She was willing to elaborate and get in the details. And she is full of warmth and compassionate,” explains Amy.
Recently, over a period of 4-5 months, Amy’s boys were hit with “everything imaginable!” Together Amy, Ethan, and Dr. Sells solved stomach flu, strep throat, ear infection, sinus infection, flu, pink eye and bronchitic/pneumonia, in that order!
Amy and Ethan feel extremely fortunate for the support and expertise they get from Dr. Sells. “I can’t tell you how many times I simply wanted to reach out and give her a hug,” says Amy. “She’s like a sister.”
