Job Title:  Dental Assistant

Primary Purpose:  Under supervision, the dental assistant provides dental care delivery support by preparing treatment rooms, patients, instruments and materials.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs procedures in accordance compliance with dental Practice Act.

  • Prepares treatment room for patient by following prescribed procedures and protocol.

  • Prepares patient for dental treatment by welcoming, comforting, seating and draping patient.

  • Provides information to patients and employees by answering questions and requests.

  • Provides diagnostic information by exposing and developing radiographic studies

  • Educates patients by giving oral hygiene, plaque control and postoperative instructions.

  • Documents dental care services by charting in patient records.

  • Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols.

  • Assembles instrumentation by sterilizing and delivering instruments to treatment area, positioning instruments for dentist’s access, suctioning, and passing instruments. 

  • Maintains dental supplies inventory.

  • Assists in the provision of direct patient care in all dental specialties, including orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics and oral surgery.

  • Ensures operation of dental equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements, following manufacturer’s instructions, troubleshooting malfunctions, calling for repairs, maintaining equipment inventories and evaluating new equipment techniques. 

  • Performs office management tasks requiring the use of personal computer.

  • Prolonged walking

  • Occasional bending, stooping, reaching and lifting.

  • Demonstrates good common sense and sound judgment in dealing with the public, employees, and management.

  • Able to follow directions.

  • Communicate directly, clearly and effectively with the public, employees and managers.

  • Be approachable; relate well to others; be receptive to feedback and articulate clearly.

  • Actively listens and get clarification if necessary to identify and resolve support requests.

  • Speaks clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations.

  • Be able to work with others in a team environment.



  • Strong presentation and communication skills.

  • Project friendly and professional demeanor when dealing with staff.

  • Ability to work with a team and carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines and standard acceptable practices.



  • Bachelor’s degree preferred



  • 1 year of dental office experience preferred.

  • Experience with EMR (electronic medical records) preferred
