Primary Purpose: The Lead Medical Technologist will perform clinical laboratory procedures, quality assurance, and instrument maintenance. The Lead Medical Technologist will also maintain cooperative working relationships with intradepartmental and interdepartmental staff.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Assists Director of Laboratory with administrative duties to include but not limited to: scheduling staff and ordering supplies

Performs routine and special laboratory tests in a designated medical specialty area, recognizes test inconsistencies and takes appropriate corrective action. Assists laboratory co-workers in resolution of similar problems. Seeks help from the section head or clinical pathologist when needed.

Calls in critical test results to physicians or nurses immediately and according to established criteria. Maintains the abnormal results log according to protocol. Prepares test reports legibly. Initials and dates work performed. Reviews reports for clerical accuracy and clinical indications.

Performs quality-control tests in a designated area. Analyzes quality-control data and takes appropriate corrective action when results are outside acceptable limits. Assists laboratory co-workers in resolution of similar problems. Seeks help from the section head as required. Documents actions taken. Holds patient results until out-of-control situations are resolved. Reports unresolved situations to the section head, or when appropriate, to the clinical pathologist.

Documents all instrument checks, preventive maintenance, routines, problems, and corrective actions taken. Recognizes, analyzes, and takes corrective action to resolve instrument/clinical problems. Assists laboratory co-workers in the resolution of similar problems. Seeks help from the section head as required. Reports unresolved instrument/clinical problems to the section head.

Performs clerical functions associated with the designated laboratory area.

Contributes to the general laboratory functions and institutional needs. Performs specimen collection and processing duties according to policies established in the medical specialty area.

Attends regular department staff meetings and in-service training.

Attends and participates in the preparation and/or presentation of the laboratory continuing education programs.

Observes laboratory and hospital policies, procedures, and safety practices. Required Skills/Abilities:

Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
Education and Experience:
-
Bachelor’s degree and the successful completion of an accredited medical technology program or the equivalent training, education, and experience.

State of Hawaii clinical technologist license is required.
Physical Requirements:
-
Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
-
Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
-
Exposure to infection from disease-bearing specimens, to odorous chemicals and specimens.

Subject to electrical hazards.
