Job Summary:
Directs specific nursing care activities and renders professional nursing care to patients within an assigned unit of the hospital, supporting medical care as directed by medical staff and pursuant to objectives and policies of the hospital. Serves all age groups of patients, including neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults and geriatrics.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Assigns duties to ancillary nursing personnel based on patients' needs, available staff and unit needs.

Coordinates and responds appropriately to crisis situations.

Accompanies physicians on rounds to answer questions, receive instructions and note patient care requirements

Functions as patient advocate

Recognizes potential for complications or risk factors and initiates action to correct or reduce risks.

Collaborates with physicians and other health care members such as dietitian, home care, etc. to coordinate multi-disciplinary plan of care.

Coordinates medical and nursing plans of care.

Gives direct patient care, evaluates all care given and patients' reactions, both emotionally and physically.

Uses nursing process in developing, implementing and evaluate a plan of care which reflects uniqueness of each patient.

Assesses history data related to patient and families perception of patient.

Assesses patient physiologically and psychologically.

Assesses teaching needs of patient and patient's family.

Identifies and interprets patient problems and plans comprehensive patient care to resolve problems.

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to any age-related needs of the patients served.

Identifies and studies nursing service problems and assists in their solutions.

Reports incidences and unusual occurrences.

Participates in the nursing care council and quality assurance program.

Identifies and studies nursing service problems and assists in their solutions.

Maintains a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff.

Reports safety problems and makes recommendations.

Carefully assesses staff skills when making patient assignments to team members

Assists in orientation of new personnel to the unit.

Attends and contributes to monthly staff meetings and in-service educational programs.

Maintains skills and knowledge through participation in educational programs, seminars & workshops and reading professional journals.

Attends mandatory hospital in services programs.

Maintains current CPR and other required certifications

Completes mandatory KMC online competencies; and departmental competencies
-
Attends team conference for the planning of nursing care and may preside over them as delegated by the nursing supervisor/charge nurse.

Participates in patient and family teaching on a routine basis.
-
Complies with all hospital and departmental policies and procedures, safety program requirements, corporate compliance program standards of conduct, all applicable statutes, rules and regulations.

Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
Qualifications:
1. Current unencumbered State of Hawaii registered nurse license is required.
2. Current specialty certification desirable.
3. Two years of hospital experience preferred.
Physical, Communication, Mental and Environmental Demands:
1. Long periods of standing and walking.
2. Occasional bending, stooping, reaching and sitting.
3. Continuous use of vision (corrected vision, depth perception, wide field of vision and color vision).
4. Pushing and pulling up to 300 lbs.
5. Lifting with assistance up to 150 lbs.
6. Carrying up to 50 lbs.
7. Ability to converse, read, write understand and instruct in English.
8. Continuous attention to detail, concentration and alertness, with frequent mathematical ability.
9. Exposure to blood and bodily fluids.
